DR MARWA HASSAN
I am interested in clinical microbiology, studying bacterial interactions, persistence and antimicrobial resistance. I am also passionate to understand bacterial communities at a single-cell level especially in biofilm models. I finished my PhD from The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, and developed different culture-independent diagnostic platforms to allow rapid detection of bacterial sepsis. I also worked on developing a simple diagnostic assay for the detection of TB during my Master's thesis. I worked as a lead researcher on a diverse range of molecular biology techniques to characterise hepatitis C virus, Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical isolates phenotypically and genotypically. In 2018, I moved to the UK to join Dr. Freya Harrison's lab to work on the ex vivo lung model of cystic fibrosis, and to understand polymicrobial communities in biofilm models in order to improve current diagnostics. I am also interested in science communication, teaching (I was a demonstrator at UQ) and currently a communication ambassador for the Australian Society for Microbiology. |
