PHOEBE DO CARMO SILVA
I am a PhD student in the Harrison Lab at the University of Warwick. I have a strong interest in research into antimicrobial resistance and opportunistic pathogens in cystic fibrosis patients. My PhD is through the MIBTP DTP which is funded by the BBSRC. My project is on ‘The effect of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae on the microbiology of the cystic fibrosis lung’ and supervised by Dr Freya Harrison and Dr Darryl Hill at the University of Bristol. My research is focused on the understudied bacterial pathogen, non-typeable H. influenzae, and exploring how this pathogen colonises the lungs and affects disease progression in people with cystic fibrosis. Through usage of the ex vivo pig lung model I will be able to investigate how the bacterium alters the physiology and metabolism to persist in the lungs and determine whether H. influenzae paves the way for other and more severe pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa to invade the lungs. You can watch a three-minute talk about my research here! |
